The Crescent City Stage is opening doors for actors and artists within the theater industry in the Greater New Orleans community.
The idea began back in 2020 created by Elizabeth Elkins Newcomer, Jana Mestecky, and Michael A. Newcomer for actors in the local community looking for opportunities to perform and attend courses. With over 50 years of combined experience working in the arts, the company sets itself apart by creating a diverse environment for theater to come to life.
Exacerbated by the pandemic, the theater and entertainment industry was halted by lockdowns and social distancing. As a way to support the theater industry and working actors, the Crescent City Stage began.
During the month of September, Crescent City Stage is partnering with The Actor's Apothecary to offer professional courses for the community held at 1506 Prytania St.
The two courses offered at the moment are Scene Study on Monday evenings on September 12, 19, 26, and October 3 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Movement and Character for the Young Actor on Saturday mornings on September 10, 17, 24, and October 1 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.
The theater company is opening its residency at the Marquette Theater located in Marquette Hall at Loyola University New Orleans presenting Derek Walcott's "Pantomime" playing from September 8-25.
The play written by Nobel Prize playwright, Derek Walcott is a witty, swift comedy set on the island of Tobago recounting the story of an English hotel owner who seeks to entertain his guests by writing a satire about Robison Crusoe alongside his black handyman.
The play tells a story that examines the effects of colonialism, Caribbean identity, and censorship in a dark but humorous dialect between the two. The play is directed by Dr. John "Ray" Proctor and led by Michael A. Newcomer as Harry and Michael C. Forest as Jackson.
