Get Jazzed Up at These NOLA Spots

Jazz music has been an important element of New Orleans culture since the early 20th century. Pioneered by Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Nick LaRocca, and many more, jazz is embedded in the New Orleans way of life. You can hardly walk in the French Quarter without hearing a lilting saxophone coming from somewhere.

1. The Jazz Playhouse

The Jazz Playhouse combines three of the things New Orleanians care most about: jazz, food, and cocktails. With an ambience that harkens to the jazz clubs of old, The Jazz Playhouse offers a variety of shows to suit both the dedicated fan and the first time listener. Located in the Royal Sonesta Hotel, the venue is open from 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 1 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

2. The Spotted Cat

The Spotted Cat is a beloved New Orleans jazz club favored by locals and tourists alike. The music offerings extend beyond jazz into blues, funk, and many more genres! Before you know it, you'll find yourself getting up out of your seat to dance the night away. The Spotted Cat is open from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily.

3. Mahogany Jazz Hall

Starting out as a hostel in 1888, the Mahogany Jazz Hall's atmosphere is charmingly time-worn, transporting you to jazz's heyday in the early 20th century. The venue offers live jazz and burlesque shows seven days a week alongside an extensive menu of cocktails, absinthe, beer, and wine. Monday through Friday, Mahogany Jazz Hall opens at 5 p.m. On the weekends, the hall opens at 2 p.m.

4. Snug Harbor

As its name suggests, Snug Harbor is a cozy and intimate spot for a delicious meal and a jazz performance. Sometimes, there's nothing better than eating with friends or family and soaking up some great music. Snug Harbor has nightly showtimes at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Their dining room is open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

5. Fritzel's

Fritzel's boasts 365 live jazz nights. So, whenever the feeling hits you and you've just got to hear some jazz, Fritzel's is there for you. There are music performances all day beginning at 12:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and at 1 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Fritzel's is also home to its very own All-Star Band, which performs at 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Sunday and at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

6. Maison Bourbon

Maison Bourbon is tackling jazz preservation with one of the best set-ups in the city: non-stop authentic jazz! One of two jazz clubs still standing on Bourbon Street, Maison Bourbon is a New Orleans gem preserving the music that means so much to the city. The club is open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

7. Davenport Lounge

The Davenport Lounge is a cocktail bar and music parlor located in The Ritz-Carlton. Jeremy Davenport and his band perform from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday and from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Friday through Saturday. You can also visit the lounge even when the band is not performing from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. everyday. If you're feeling fancy, visit Davenport Lounge from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekends for afternoon tea service!

8. Le Bon Temps Roule

Le Bon Temps Roule is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with live music, billiards, drinks, and food! The club is also the home of the Soul Rebels, a New Orleans-based jazz fusion band. Whenever you go to Le Bon Temps Roule, the good times are sure to roll! Be sure to try out one of their delicious smash burgers.

9. Sweet Lorraine's

For an authentic New Orleans experience, Sweet Lorraine's is the place. With live music ranging between jazz, blues, and R&B, as well as a menu full of Southern comfort food, Sweet Lorraine's serves up an experience that is good for the soul. Sweet Lorraine's is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays and open from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday and 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

10. Blue Nile

Blue Nile is a New Orleans favorite for live music and community. Located on the historic Frenchmen Street, Blue Nile offers an array of music genres and a full bar menu. The club is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and open from 9 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Thursdays, 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 9 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sundays.
