Freak Out, They're Back!

Vaulternative Records finally returns after a decade-long hiatus to deliver one of the more interesting looks into Zappa's early Mothers period.

Released as a first part in a series dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the original Freak Out! by Zappa and the Mothers, this album is the birth child of unearthed Zappa recordings from a TV special where the Mothers got to show their more freaky lifestyle. The album is a collage of classic rock, jazz, and operates much like an orchestra as the Mothers instruct the "freaks" on when to sing or act out. Stylistically, it is almost entirely instrumental album that feels like a mix of Zappa's Guitar and Hot Rats / Waka Jawaka. For fans of those albums, there will be much to enjoy here, as well.

Additionally, the album features a few rough-cuts of songs released in the future such as "Khaki Sack" and "Duke of Prunes." All in all, it's a great album to have in the background if you enjoy more instrumental and creative tracks, all wrapped nicely in a beautiful package. If ordering the special edition, the 180g traffic-cone orange will certainly look nice on well-lit record players alike.
