A Purple-Themed Celebration
Known as one of the greatest musicians in the 80's and 90's, Prince has left a long-lasting legacy on R&B, funk, soul, and pop music to this day. Like Prince, New Orleans has strong musical ties to these genres, so it's no surprise that Prince has left an impact on this city. With hits like "When Doves Cry," "Purple Rain," and "Raspberry Beret," how could someone not love Prince?
In honor of his upcoming birthday on June 7, there will be many purple-themed celebrations that will be raining over the city. Dress in your most elaborate purple outfit you can find, and head out to these Prince inspired festivities happening all weekend.
Friday, June 7
It only makes sense that Prince Day at the Ace Hotel will take place on his birthday. This special celebration of Prince, hosted by DJ Soul Sister, is a free event filled with music, cocktails and, of course, everything purple. Buy a Prince-inspired cocktail, which also benefits the Covenant House New Orleans.
The Prytania Theater Uptown will also be hosting a screening of Purple Rain at 10 p.m. A second screening will take place June 8 if you can't make it on Friday. Tickets are available on the Prytania's website.
Saturday, June 8
Next up on the weekend full of celebrations is the Purple Takeover: A Prince Celebration with DJ Soul Sister. Tipitina's will be hosting all of Prince's greatest hits at DJ Soul Sister's purple jam. The event will begin at 10 p.m. with doors opening at 9 p.m. Tickets are on sale and range from $20-40.
Sunday, June 9
To top off the Prince-filled weekend, there will be two more final events: Talking Purple with C Liegh McInnis and Purple Poetry Circle. C Liegh McInnis, author of The Lyrics of Prince: A Literary Look at a Creative, Musical Poet, Philosopher, and Storyteller, will be discussing Prince at this event. This is a free event at the Three Keys in the Ace Hotel from 3-4 p.m.
If you're a real Prince lover and enjoy poetry readings, check out the Purple Poetry Circle that will follow the Talking Purple event. Write your own Prince poem and share it with the crowd.
