Robotic bartenders, a steampunk orchestra, 3D-printed clothing, pinball, upcycling, bridge-building contests, virtual reality, gaming and mechanical sculptures! No, this is not the latest reality TV show theme. It’s the third-annual New Orleans Mini Maker Faire, a showcase of today’s latest technology and those that are employing these technologies, along with traditional crafts in creative and resourceful ways. If you haven’t been to this show, which happens this year at the Bricolage Academy near Bayou St. John, don’t miss it on Saturday, April 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fun for all ages with a huge area for children, cool crafts and tech projects, as well as adult areas, classes, demonstrations, and panel discussions.

Among the featured speakers at the event is Bob Clagett, creator of ILikeToMakeStuff.com, a former software engineer, who last year quit his day job to pursue his passion of making instructional videos on everything from woodworking to electronics. Clagett has close to 700,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel where he humbly said, “I don’t claim to be an expert on anything. I just like to make stuff!” His down-to-earth and unintimidating approach towards his crafts has made him one of the most well known “makers” today.

“Makers”, as they’re called, are people who are part of the “Maker culture”, a movement that celebrates the creation of new things, recycling of old things, taking things apart, understanding how things work, and sharing wisdom and knowledge with others. In contrast with today’s “disposable society”, makers embrace both old and new technology to craft useful and esoteric things. Maker Faires allow them to showcase their stuff and inspire others to do the same.

No matter what your skill level or interest, you will find something interesting and awe-inspiring at the NOLA Mini-Maker’s Faire, so be sure to stop by. The event is spread across the Bricolage campus both inside and outside under tents all day Saturday!
