Crescent Connection Bridge Run / Walk
Runner and walkers amassed at the Oakwood Center parking lot in Gretna on the Westbank at 5 p.m. for the start of the annual Crescent Connection Bridge Run / Walk to traverse across the Mississippi River on the the Crescent City Connection bridge.Enthusiastic participants finished their warmups and stretches to line up at the starting line on the Westbank with runners first, walkers next, and walkers with strollers and wheelchairs completed the group. The crowded field of runners and walkers left the parking lot and ascended on the closed HOV lanes on the south span, safely away from the cars rushing by, often honking their support. When cresting the bridge, a stunning sunset greeted them for the decline exiting onto Convention Center Boulevard.
From there, the route turned left at Mulate's restaurant with a quick right into the final stretch along Fulton Street. The road was lined with cheering supporters, some with humorous taunts and funny words of encouragement. As they crossed the finish line at Fulton Alley, they were met with a cold water and a finalist medal. Finishing times were provided and many joined a dance party in front of Mannings Sports Bar, while others enjoyed some post-run / walk bites and bevys.
The annual fall event is produced by the Crescent City Classic Foundation, a not-for-profit entity whose sole purpose is to promote health, fitness, and a better lifestyle for the people of the New Orleans metropolitan area. While the annual spring 10k is well known, this 5k—whose 3.6 miles route is closer to a 6K in reality—is a favorite for people ready to escape the indoors as the weather cools to get back out in the fresh air. The cool breezes off the river add to the enjoyment.
