If drinking is your thing, then National Tequila Day is the holiday for you. Taking place every July 24, the drink-inspired day has been around since the late 1990s. The first tequila was produced in 16th century Mexico, in the city of Tequila. It wouldn’t be until the late 1800s that tequila would be exported to the United States by Mexican tequila producer Sauza Tequila. Since then, tequila has become of the most popular liquors in the country.

To celebrate National Tequila Day, Milagro Tequila is promoting a special cocktail. Milagro Tequila is a Mexican tequila company founded in 1998 with the hope of making tequila that truly represents modern Mexico. Milagro has continued to stay true to their tequila ingredients and win more awards than any other tequila. The following cocktail was created by Jaime Salas, a Milagro Tequila National Ambassador, and includes the popular Mexican drink Tepache.

Cocada created by Jaime Salas Milagro Tequila National Ambassador

  • 1 ½ parts of Milagro Anejo
  • ¾ part fresh lime juice
  • ½ part Coconut Cream (to lighten this up, try using coconut water rather than cream)
  • 1 part Tepache**
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Add all ingredients and ice to a Boston shaker. Shake and strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with a pineapple leaf.

**How to Ferment Tepache:

Cut 1 pineapple (with skin) into 1-inch pieces. Combine with 2 cups of brown sugar and 8 cups of warm water into an air-tight container. Leave in a warm, draft-free area for 2-3 days. You’ll know the tepache is ready when the sugars are dissolved, and the liquid is slightly fizzing. Strain the mixture and refrigerate overnight (or at least 8 hours) before serving. (You can add spices to your tepache while it ferments too! We recommend coriander, peppercorns, and chili peppers!)
