Culture for Free
The New Orleans African American Museum is joining the Helis Foundation's Art For All, offering free admission to Louisiana residents every third Saturday.
The New Orleans African American Museum
Since 1996, The New Orleans African American Museum (NOAAM), located at 1417-1418 Gov Nicholls St., has preserved and elevated the history, art, and culture of the African diaspora and of African Americans in New Orleans. Located in the rich historical neighborhood for free people of color in America, the Tremé, NOAAM's grounds contain the former home of Marie Laveau. The museum campus expands across an entire city block and has a series of gallery spaces, Calas Cafe, a quaint tea shop, and a gift store situated in the traditional two-story shotgun double across from the historic campus across the street. The serene gardens are available for weddings, bridal teas, and small meetings and receptions.
The NOAAM is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Thursday through Sunday.
The Helis Foundation
The Helis Foundation, founded in 1955, is a Louisiana private foundation funded by the William Helis family. Their resources are divided into two distinct funds: the general fund and the Diana Helis Henry and Adrienne Helis Marvin Art Fund. The general fund focuses on community needs primarily within the Metropolitan New Orleans area by granting funds to numerous local nonprofit organizations. The Art Fund was funded by Diana Helis Henry and Adrienne Helis Marvin to establish grants to provide free admission, service operations, and acquire significant artworks on behalf of institutions in and around the greater New Orleans area.
Art is For All
The Helis Foundation believes that art is for everyone. Through their initiative they provide access to New Orleans culture and heritage to locals by guaranteeing free admission to Louisiana residents. Each local institution involved with the Helis Foundation has their own unique date for residents to come and enjoy the values, traditions, culture, and most importantly the influence of art.
