Cathy and Morris Bart Jewish Cultural Arts Series
The New Orleans Jewish Community Center (JCC) is hosting a number of free and open-to-the-public events this fall during the Jewish Cultural Arts Series, which celebrates Jewish art, heritage, music, film, and more.
Kicking off the Jewish Cultural Arts Series on August 15 is a screening of the film The Catskills—a trove of lost-and-found archival footage that takes viewers into the 20th century Catskill Mountains, where Jewish immigrants fled from poverty and created a hub of vibrant American Jewish culture. Attendees can enjoy the film from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., alongside freshly popped popcorn and food by New Orleans JCC Chef Jeff McLennan.
The series continues on September 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. as cookbook author Susan Simon and Rabbi Zoe B Zak share the history, modern interpretations, and foods of 14 Jewish holidays. In addition to classic Jewish cuisine, "The Cook and The Rabbi" event offers variations on seasonal kosher recipes and reimagines traditional dishes.
"Providing quality experiences in a Jewish environment where all can learn and grow is central to our mission. Thanks to the generosity of Cathy and Morris Bart, we can bring Jewish thought leaders, authors, artists, and their work to our community to experience Jewish culture and peoplehood," New Orleans JCC chief program officer Rachel Zoller said in a press release.
On October 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., guests can join photojournalist and TEDx speaker Erez Kaganovitz as he discusses his many projects including "Humans of October 7," "Humans of Tel Aviv," "Humans of the Holocaust," and more.
Join acclaimed Rabbi Dr. Raphael Zarum on November 25 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. as he discusses his new book Questioning Belief: Torah and Tradition in an Age of Doubt. A finalist for this year's Yeshiva University's Rabbi Sacks Book Prize, Questioning Belief uses thorough, Torah, and tradition-based responses to some of Judaism's most challenging questions.
Follow Kamal Hachkar, Neta Elkayam, and Amit Haï Cohen, subjects of Hachkar's documentary In Your Eyes, I See My Country on December 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. as they journey to their homeland of Morocco to heal generational wounds of exile and reshape their personal perceptions of who they are and who they want to become.
