Rodrigue's Early Work

The earliest works of famed Louisiana artist George Rodrigue will soon be on display at The Cabildo in the French Quarter. Representatives from Louisiana State Museums, Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser, and George's son Jacques Rodrigue hosted a preview of the wonderful exhibit "Rodrigue: Before the Blue Dog," which opens on November 22, 2024 during the Founders Ball. The attendees were also treated to a screening of the upcoming WLAE documentary film "Blue: The Life and Legacy of George Rodrigue."

This extraordinary exhibit shows the evolution of New Iberia-born artist George Rodrigue from his subject-less landscapes of Cajun Country's scenery (panned by critics as being "drab" and "flat") to his highly-sought after portraits of southern Louisiana natives and presidents alike. The plight of the Acadian people as they were exiled from Nova Scotia to settling in southern Louisiana is told in the 15-painting series "Saga of the Cajuns."

The exhibit will be open to the public from November 22, 2025 to September 2025. You can find out more information about "Rodrigue: Before the Blue Dog" here.
