Twelfth Night

Carnival season begins in January with the Twelfth Night celebrations. On January 6, various traditions will ensue, including the classic private ball held by the Twelfth Night Revelers and the Phunny Phorty Phellows street car ride.

The Twelfth Night Revelers are known as a historic Mardi Gras krewe that hosts elaborate events to initiate Carnival season. On January 6, the Phunny Phorty Phellows krewe also commences the start of Carnival with a ride down St. Charles in a festively decorated street car.

Lundi Gras

[Gustavo Escanelle]

Lundi Gras represents the day before Fat Tuesday, with the tradition of New Orleans' major "turning over" authority to Rex, the King of Carnival. Since 1874, this tradition has been upheld, but it has also evolved. Formerly arriving to the city by boat and riding in carriage to City Hall, King Rex now meets the mayor alongside King of the Zulu and joins various events in Woldenberg Park.

Fat Tuesday

[Gustavo Escanelle]

Fat Tuesday is Mardi Gras Day, encompassing the final festivities of Carnival season. It is traditional for Carnival to end the day before Ash Wednesday, indicating the first day of Lent. After a season of indulgence, Fat Tuesday is the final chance to splurge before reflection ensues for Lent.
