Walking for Peace with Little Amal

Little Amal, a 12-foot puppet of a young Syrian refugee, is traveling across the country for a two-month performance art project titled The Walk, which symbolizes human refugee rights and makes commentary on refugee awareness. The Walk pushes the experience of those who are marginalized to the forefront and gives an opportunity for others to imagine an alternate perspective.

She is making a stop at the Lafitte Greenway on October 14 during LPO's Musical Storytime at 10:30 a.m., which will kick off with a reading of "Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp! A Sonic Adventure" and live accompaniment by LPO's viola player Catherine Matushek and Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra Academy students.

At 10:45 a.m., Mayor LaToya Cantrell will officially welcome Little Amal before LPO and Home is Here NOLA will walk Little Amal down the Lafitte Gateway in a second line led by Preservation Hall Brass Band.

Little Amal has visited about 15 countries since the beginning of The Walk in 2021, been welcomed by over one million people on the streets, and has been seen by tens of millions online. Her trip to New Orleans will mark a particularly celebratory stop as the city is a fusion of multiculturalism and heritage. Her journey has become one of the largest free public festivals ever created. Little Amal's urgent message that she shares with the world is to remember the children fleeing persecution, famine, violence, and war.
