White Wine and Springtime

As the New Orleans breeze starts to turn sweet and the days stretch a little longer, there is a distinct shift in the local palate toward lighter, brighter flavors.

On April 16, Legacy Kitchen's Steak + Chop in Gretna captured that seasonal energy perfectly with their White Wine and Springtime event. The evening was a curated journey through five courses, each paired with a specific white varietal provided by the locally owned and operated Neat Wines. It wasn't just a dinner; it was a sensory experience where the food and wine were given equal billing.

The first course set a sophisticated tone with Truffle-Stuffed Mushrooms. Packed with Cajun rice and drizzled in a silky beurre blanc, the dish was paired with an Angel Falls Sauvignon Blanc from the Touraine region of the Loire Valley. The wine's crisp acidity and citrus notes provided a sharp contrast to the rich, earthy truffle, acting as an immediate palate cleanser to kick off the night. The momentum continued with a Fennel Pear Salad, bringing together arugula, sliced apples, salty prosciutto, and tangy goat cheese. This was paired with Border Rows Pinot Grigio from Italy. The wine's clean finish was specifically chosen to complement the creaminess of the goat cheese without overwhelming the delicate pear.

The real showstopper of the night was the third course: Seared Diver Scallops served over a Corn and Crab Risotto. There was something incredibly interesting about the way the kitchen combined the soul of a crab and corn bisque with the refined texture of a perfectly seared scallop and a creamy risotto. It was a masterclass in coastal comfort. The pairing was a Le Vigne Chardonnay from Paso Robles. Unlike a typical heavily-oaked Chardonnay, this bottle was round and ripe, mirroring and offsetting the buttery richness of the dish.

The fourth course featured Blackened Chicken Pesto Pasta, where the herbaceous pesto on angel hair offered a bright lift against the familiar Louisiana kick of the blackened chicken. It was paired with a Fess Parker Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County, a classic California choice with enough body to stand up to the bold pesto.

The finale was a nostalgic Strawberries Cookies and Cream—a deconstructed take on strawberry shortcake featuring vanilla wafers, fresh strawberries, and chocolate curls. Paired with a floral Fess Parker Riesling, the dessert was light, seasonal, and provided the perfect sweet note to end the night. While the menu was the draw, the atmosphere of the evening transformed the dinner into something far more profound. There is a unique bonding that happens over a shared five-course meal; by the second pour, the entire table had shifted from polite small talk to genuine, deep connection. Guests who started the night as strangers were soon laughing like old friends, sharing stories and finding common ground in that unique New Orleans way.

This sense of community was amplified by the staff, who were, quite frankly, incredible. Their attentiveness and passion for the pairings turned a great meal into a memorable event. Whether it was the seamless service or the way they treated every guest like a regular, the team at Steak + Chop ensured the night was flawless. That partnership carried through with their relationship with Neat Wines.

John Lott, a sales representative for Neat Wines, really emphasized why this "local-first" approach is so vital to our city. "We do business as much as possible with locally owned, locally operated businesses," Lott explained. "Everything we get, we try to give back to the people who gave us so much. We all have to kind of band together and work together. We face a lot of adversity, we face a lot of things, and it's important for us to be together as a community. Neat Wines is a small boutique company; we are locally owned and locally operated. So please patronize your local wine shop, please patronize your locally owned grocer, and please patronize Legacy Kitchen."

Behind the scenes, the evening was fueled by a deep bench of local talent. Kitchen Manager Kendall Ricks brought years of elite training to the menu. His expertise was most evident in that risotto, a dish that requires precise technique to achieve that Italian-inspired consistency while keeping the flavors rooted in the Gulf. "I trained very much with different chefs from New York and Italy, and that was the inspiration of risotto in corn and crab," Ricks noted.

The dessert course also carries a bit of personal history for the kitchen team. Ricks shared that the Strawberries Cookies and Cream has been a centerpiece for Valentine's and Mother's Day specials, and it even served as the vessel for a successful marriage proposal at the restaurant. It is that level of personal care—helping create memories like a "yes" to a lifetime together—that sets the kitchen apart.

General Manager Bernard Stolberg shared the broader vision for the brand, noting that while Legacy Kitchen spans several locations—including Tackle Box in the CBD and Craft Tavern in the Warehouse District—each one has its own neighborhood connection. "Being here in Gretna, being Legacy Kitchen Steak + Chop, it was like a little spin on a local neighborhood steakhouse," Stolberg explained. "The story is that it was Legacy Kitchen, and it was a collection, but each one has a very local neighborhood connection. We are local, we are all here, and it's what makes us special. We love what we do."

The excitement peaked during the wine raffles, where several lucky guests walked away with bottles from Neat Wines, adding an extra layer of celebration to the evening. Legacy Kitchen plans to host these curated dinners once a quarter, exploring different themes ranging from wine and cocktails to spritzers and seasonal pairings. It is the perfect spot for anyone looking for an elevated experience that doesn't feel stuffy or rushed.

If you weren't able to make it to this event, I highly recommend getting a jump on their upcoming Mother's Day special on Sunday, May 10. They will be offering a curated Mother's Day menu featuring a 10 oz. Prime Rib with loaded mashed potatoes and a decadent Red Velvet Cake for dessert. It's the perfect opportunity to treat the woman who raised you to the same level of hospitality I experienced here. I am already looking forward to my next return. Between the world-class technique and the unbeatable local vibe, Legacy Kitchen Steak + Chop is doing exactly what New Orleans does best: bringing people together over a table that feels like home.
