Dat Dog New Orleans Earns National Recognition from PETA
Dat Dog, a New Orleans staple hot dog restaurant, has gained national acclaim for one of its meat-free items on its menu. PETA has included the local spot in its 2026 list of the top 10 restaurants in the country that serve vegan sausages, exactly in time for Oktoberfest.
The award goes to Dat Dog's "Vegan Banger," a dish featuring a vegan bratwurst on a toasted sweet sourdough bun, topped with sauerkraut, dill relish, grilled onions, tomatoes, and Creole mustard. If you are vegan, vegetarian, or just want something deliciously plant-based, this gives you confirmation to check out Dat Dog's vegan banger. Those who wish to customize their meal, or add even more flavor, can also create their own dog using one of four vegan sausage options: apple sage, spicy chipotle, vegan bratwurst, or vegan Italian.
In the announcement, Ingrid Newkirk, founder of PETA, stated that Dat Dog offers delicious, sizzling sausages with bold, plant-based flavors that are a win for both animals and diners.
PETA will award Dat Dog a framed certificate for making the national Top 10 list. Other restaurants to receive recognition include Hollerbach's German Restaurant in Sanford, Florida; The Vanguard in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Fassler Hall in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

A New Orleans Favorite
Dat Dog started humbly in 2011 as a small 475-square-foot hot dog stand. It has since expanded to three different New Orleans locations across the city. The restaurant is widely known for putting a modern spin on the classic hot dog, offering a wide range of sausages and toppings, from traditional beef and smoked bratwurst to more exotic options such as alligator, crawfish, and vegan hot dogs.
Dat Dog now has locations at 601 Frenchmen St., 3336 Magazine St., and 5030 Freret St. The Freret Street spot is currently closed for remodeling, but you can still visit the Magazine Street and Frenchmen Street locations.
