Would you like to visit a historic battlefield? Come down to Chalmette Battlefield Friday, January 6 through Saturday, January 7 for the 2023 Commemoration of the Battle of New Orleans. On these days, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. you can be immersed in the history that shaped New Orleans. There will be plenty of fun activities, demonstrations, singing, and stories. From farm life to military life, bread making and sewing, to musket and cannon demonstrations, you won't want to miss it!
The Battle of New Orleans was a hard fought battle between the British and Americans on January 8, 1815. The battle lasted two hours but the tension started five months prior when the British started a Gulf Campaign to attempt to take New Orleans. Somehow, America triumphed over Britain, even though the Red Coats had more power, people, and training.
The Commemoration of the Battle of New Orleans is a National Park Service historic event with activities for the whole family. The Battle of New Orleans Commemoration Week also includes the Jackson Day Race, Wreath Laying Ceremony and Lecture Series. As far as parking goes, public parking will be available at the St. Bernard Parish Government Complex (8201 W Judge Perez Dr., Chalmette), and will have free shuttles that will start at 9:15 a.m on Friday, and end with the last shuttle leaving the commemoration at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. There will be no public parking at the Chalmette Battlefield and National Cemeteries during the event. All of the events are free and open to the public, except the lantern tour.
