34 Restaurant's Portugal Day Celebration
Nothing unites people quite like food, especially in New Orleans. Food has a unique way of bringing people together, tempting them to reach for seconds, and getting them sitting around a table and talking for hours. Food is a cultural emblem with the power to create new communities while preserving the flavors perfected by the generations who came before.
It is this unifying and culturally significant nature of food that Chef Emeril Lagasse is drawing upon with his Portugal Day Celebration at 34 Restaurant & Bar.
What is Portugal Day?
Just as a delicious dinner time meal can gather people around a table, Portugal Day, or Dia de Portugal, is an annual, worldwide celebration on June 10 during which Portuguese communities come together and honor their heritage.
The Details
Taking place on Sunday, June 8 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Portugal Day Celebration will include long-established Portuguese favorites, such as bifanas and pastéis de nata. There will also be a selection of Portuguese drinks, such as vinho verde, Super Bock, and sangria, as well as crafted cocktails.
The celebration will feature live music from funk and disco artist DJ C'est Funk. Tickets are $60 and are all-inclusive, and 34 Restaurant & Bar is located at 714 Baronne St.
A Mother's Legacy
34 Restaurant & Bar is itself a testament to Chef Lagasse's Portuguese roots, which have inspired much of his journey as a chef. His Portuguese mother, Hilda, influenced his early foray into the world of the culinary arts as he learned traditional Portuguese recipes from her. Raised in Fall River, MA, Chef Lagasse grew up surrounded by America's largest Portuguese community.
The restaurant pays homage to his mother as her legacy lives on in its Portuguese-inspired menu. The atmosphere is rooted in a lively, sharing-based tapas selection and jamon bar.
