The idea of an alliance of superheroes a la The Avengers has been expanded to mythical childhood figures with Rise of the the Guardians.
The new film imagines a world in which Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and the Sandman are all real “guardians” of the world’s youth. Their existence is threatened by Pitch, aka the Boogeyman. Pitch’s plan is to frighten children so much that they will stop believing in Santa and company, which will cause them to die. The actual hero of the piece is Jack Frost, here portrayed as a roguish young outsider recruited to help the established guardians fight Pitch.
Even by children’s fantasy standards, the plotting is pretty humdrum and the characters are fairly one-dimensional. However, the visuals are cool, and there’s enough action that children will likely be entertained. Adults will almost certainly forget the film within a month, but the experience is painless enough for parents looking for some holiday entertainment for the kiddies.
