New Orleans RTA Free Days

The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will waive fares on buses, streetcars, and ferries during several key voting days this fall.

This initiative was designed to make it easier for residents to get to the polls and make their voices count in local issues. Free rides will be available on both Saturdays of early voting—September 27 and October 4—as well as on Election Day, October 11, during the 2025 election cycle.

By removing transportation costs, the RTA hopes to reduce one of the barriers that can prevent people from casting their ballots. Riders are not required to show any proof of registration or provide special documentation to use the free-ride service. To help plan trips, passengers can turn to the RTA's Le Pass app, which gives real-time updates on routes and schedules.

History & More Info

The fare-free program builds on a policy that was first introduced in 2020. This is when the RTA Board of Commissioners, who worked alongside the New Orleans City Council, approved eliminating fares on election days. This move demonstrates how the agency's ongoing commitment to accessibility and equity is implemented through active efforts to increase voter turnout. Extending that policy to early voting days is another way to support broad participation in the democratic process, particularly for voters who may face financial or transportation challenges.

With this beneficial initiative by RTA, it is important to exercise your constitutional rights respectfully and intentionally. Making change takes time, so it is always handy have some tips on how to handle this election season.

Information about routes and schedules is available at norta.com. Riders can also download the Le Pass app or call the Rideline at (504) 248-3900. With free service available by bus, streetcar, or ferry, New Orleanians are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to get to the polls and make their voices and votes count.
