New Orleans Library Celebrates Library Card Sign-up Month
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the New Orleans Public Library is giving residents another reason to keep a library card handy. This month, the library is celebrating with a new Culture Pass partner, free tote bags, and continued access to resources throughout Orleans Parish.
Library Card Sign-up Month has been recognized nationally by the American Library Association since 1987. The annual campaign coincides with the beginning of the school year and encourages children and families to take advantage of the resources available through their local libraries.
In New Orleans, anyone who signs up for or renews a library card during September can receive a free canvas tote bag while supplies last. The bags feature illustrations by local artist Nichól Brinkman of Pink Cheeks Studios.
One of the library's most popular offerings goes beyond books. Its Culture Pass program provides eligible cardholders with free admission to museums and attractions throughout New Orleans. With the addition of its newest partner, the program now provides access to 16 cultural destinations for cardholders over 18 who live in Orleans Parish.
A New Culture Pass Destination
Starting September 1, the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum is the newest attraction to join the Culture Pass program. The museum is located at 514 Chartres St. in the French Quarter and focuses on the history of pharmacy and medicine, especially in New Orleans and Louisiana.
The museum itself is part of that history. Its French Quarter townhouse dates to the 1820s and once served as both the home and apothecary of Louis J. Dufilho, Jr., the first licensed pharmacist in the United States. Today, visitors can explore two floors of exhibits examining pharmacy and medicine during the 19th century.
Culture Pass tickets must be reserved in advance, and each Pharmacy Museum pass provides admission for up to four people. Eligible library cardholders can make reservations through the Culture Pass program.
With more than 15 locations serving Orleans Parish, the New Orleans Public Library has grown considerably since its origins in 1843. Library Card Sign-up Month offers both new and returning cardholders a chance to explore what their card can provide, from traditional library resources to free access to some of the city's cultural institutions.
