Preparing for School

The annual NOLA Back 2 School Fest, presented by Shell, will provide 5,000 free backpacks filled with school supplies for students in grades K-6 who live in the Greater New Orleans area.

It is on Saturday, July 27, from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Xavier University Center. The event will help students get excited about the school year ahead and gather all needed school supplies easily and swiftly.

Students can better learn and express themselves if they have the needed supplies. This way, students are able to get more out of their education. President of Xavier University Reynold Verret said in a press release that "...they are the next generation who will heal the broken world and be a gift to all as they fulfill their academic journeys."

Many kids are unable to gather supplies on their own, and this event intends to help alleviate that issue.

"This annual event on Xavier's campus, supported by Shell Corporation, provides essential supplies to students who might otherwise not have access to such items and gives them the confidence to begin their school year with a great start," Verret said.

Shell has helped fund this event for years, as a way to give service to the community. Shell's Senior Vice President Colette Hirstius said in a press release, "One of the best ways we can give back to the community that we love is to invest in our kids."

In order to ensure a free backpack, pre-register online. If you pre-register, you may drive through and pick up your goods or you can walk through the entrance of the St. Joseph Center across the street from Xavier University Center.
