K20 Website Honors 20 Years Since Katrina

To observe 20 years since Hurricane Katrina, the city of New Orleans is releasing the K20 Commemoration Website, an informative database about the storm and its aftermath, stretching into the present day.

K20's mission is to act as a comprehensive nucleus for facts, statistics, and personal reflections on Hurricane Katrina.

Features of the Website

Defining aspects of K20 are a timeline documenting the storm and subsequent recuperation efforts, news about upcoming events, the sharing of stories from community members, and information about opportunities for volunteering and other outreach efforts. The platform also serves as a connective space where those affected by Hurricane Katrina can gather, converse, and find out about future commemorative events.

Beyond the Web

New Orleans residents and establishments are invited to check in frequently to K20 for the latest news and events as we approach Hurricane Katrina's 20th anniversary in August. The city also invites those motivated to improve their community to take part in a week of events from August 23 to 30 that are geared towards remembrance, service, and growth.

Examples of what to expect during this commemorative week are as follows. On Saturday, August 23, there will be a Citywide Day of Service intended to improve parks throughout New Orleans with the help of NORD, the Neighborhood Engagement Office, Parks & Parkways, and United Way. Additionally, on Saturday, August 30, the K20 Summit will take place at Gallier Hall and feature talks on community improvements, as well as breakout sessions for small-group discussions. The Summit's motto is "Resilient. Evolved. Empowered.," three words that encompass the spirit of New Orleans and how, despite all the odds, we keep bouncing back.

Individuals and organizations alike are also welcome to submit event ideas for consideration by the city of New Orleans.
