Legal THC Edibles Hit Shelves in New Orleans

In 2015, Louisiana became the first state in the Deep South to legalize medical marijuana.

Sort of. Restrictions on production, high prices, and-until recently-a ban on smokable marijuana made it tough for people to use the newly somewhat-legal product.

Things are different now. Thanks to House Bill 391, which became law in 2022, Louisianans with a medical prescription can now legally possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower. So the battle for medical marijuana has been won. Louisianans who want to use marijuana recreationally, though, are out of luck.

Or are they?

Although it is not yet federally legal to consume marijuana recreationally, marijuana is not the only form of cannabis in which THC is available. Federal legislation has made it possible for consumers across the country to enjoy hemp-derived cannabis products that contain THC. The Farm Bill of 2018 legalized the production and use of marijuana's sister plant, hemp, nationwide.

It's not just that the many industrial uses of hemp are legal. You can also legally consume any of the cannabinoids present in the hemp plant.

In order to maintain compliance in Louisiana, in February, Crescent Canna became the first New Orleans company to register Delta-9 THC products with the Louisiana Department of Health. Its new line of independently lab-tested Canna Moons Delta-9 THC Gummies are federally legal and provide many of the same benefits and effects as marijuana.

Canna Moons are made with hemp-derived Delta-9 THC and CBD. They are vegan, gluten-free, and available in Blue Raspberry, Green Apple, and Peach flavors.

You've probably seen shops touting hemp-derived CBD wares. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-Delta-9 THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid found in all Cannabis sativa plants-can be isolated from hemp as well and can be legally sold and consumed if the amount of THC that a product contains is no more than 0.3% by dry weight. (In fact, whether a plant has more than 0.3% THC is what determines whether it is legally regarded as hemp or as marijuana.)

Although the permissible percentage of THC seems vanishingly low, in heavy edibles like gummies the molecules add up fast. Each Canna Moons gummy contains a substantial and potent 12 mg of Delta-9 THC. And the 5 mg of CBD that is also incorporated in each gummy provides a calm, relaxing counterbalance to any possible negative side effects of THC like anxiety or paranoia.

Every Crescent Canna product is tested for quality, purity, and potency by an independent third-party lab. "We set the standard for testing and transparency in the CBD industry," says Crescent Canna CEO Joe Gerrity. "Now we're following the same standard to provide legal, safe, and effective THC products."

You can buy Canna Moons and the rest of Crescent Canna's legal THC edibles in more than 100 stores throughout New Orleans and from the Crescent Canna website. On the website, use the discount code NOLA for 25% off your next order.

You must be 21 or older to buy and consume THC products.
