Every year around Halloween, New Orleans hosts the most thrilling haunted houses. Some of these haunted houses are even located in actual, historically haunted buildings.

New Orleans is known as "the most haunted city in America," and this city is crawling with haunting and ghostly spirits during Halloween. The haunted houses here in New Orleans are like no other, they're guaranteed to give you a frightfully good time.

Best Haunted Houses in New Orleans

1. The Mortuary Haunted House

This haunted mansion actually operated as a mortuary for around 80 years in the 1800's and is now a historically haunted site in New Orleans. This Halloween, The Mortuary is hosting a "Blood Wedding".

All mortals are invited to this blood wedding on Halloween Eve and are asked to wear their darkest attire to match their even darker heart. Attend this spooky blood wedding in all black attire or get general admission tickets for the regular haunted house.


2. New Orleans Nightmare Haunted House

This Halloween season, New Orleans Nightmare is offering many different attractions for visitors. The themed haunted experiences, Deadlands, Repossessed, and Midnight Mortuary, are sure to give you a fright. Each of these haunted house experiences has an elaborate story that gives background information for the theme, which makes the experience even more entertaining.

New Orleans Nightmare also has a secret bar called "Shot in the Dark", which is a horror themed bar. There is also Bar 13, which has spooky-themed cocktails. To add to your experience, New Orleans Nightmare also has an escape room and a maze where participants must navigate their path in total darkness.


3. The Haunted Hotel

This hotel is said to be New Orleans' oldest and most haunted hotel. Many guests have witnessed paranormal encounters, and sometimes, guests are too frightened to make it through a whole night at this hotel.

The Haunted Hotel has experienced hundred of murders, some dating back hundreds of years. Ghost tours are available to book and will take you throughout the hotel while relaying the history of the building and perhaps experiencing a few ghost sightings.


4. Ghost Manor on Magazine Street

This victorian-era house supposedly is home to many ghostly spirits and the current owners of the home decided to play into this fact. Since 2012, light installments make the windows look like ghosts are flying past them. Every year, a new technological element is added.

The Ghost Manor will be open on October 21, 22, 27, 28, and 31 from 7 to 10 p.m. These dates are subject to change with weather permitting.


5. Bloody Mary's Haunted Museum

Bloody Mary's Tours will take you through a haunted museum, which contains artifacts from haunted objects, true crime possessions, occult artifacts, and voodoo altars. This museum is said to have 13 resident ghosts and, on the tour, the aim to hunt down these spirits.

When you visit this museum, you will hear its haunted history and visit with the paranormal dolls put on display. There are other experiences that Bloody Mary's Tours provides, all equally haunting.


6. RISE Haunted House

RISE has three extravagant attractions that are sure to be a fright. RISE Haunted House, Risewell Asylum, and RISE Haunted Hayride are this year's Halloween attractions. All these attractions have a rich storyline and eerie settings

Dates and times for RISE vary from night to night, so make sure to check the website about more ticket information. In 2021, Legendary Haunt Tour named RISE as the Destination Site for having legendary haunted attractions.


7. The Haunted LaLaurie Mansion

Wander through the halls of this allegedly cursed house that the infamous Delphine LaLaurie once resided in. It is said that the ghosts of slaves who once were kept within the house have been haunting the building for the past 200 years. One might possibly hear the ghastly moans of spirits or the ominous footsteps walking throughout the house.

This building has a rich history and has had many different owners and purposes. Once it was an apartment building where a tenant was brutally murdered. Another time, it was used as an all girls boarding school where eerie occurrences of suspicious bruisings would appear on the students' arms.


8. Bernie Baxter's Traveling Sideshow

On October 27, 28, and the 31, Bernie Baxter is bringing a whole new act to the sideshow. This year, the story of Marni's Marvels will be added to the tale. Marni's Marvels is about a roadside attraction with a very dark secret, and you'll have to see the show to find it out.

Since 2005, Bernie Baxter's Traveling Sideshow is New Orleans' oldest haunted attraction. The main show is not for children, but they will have a special area for kids and trick or treating on Halloween night.


9. Haunted French Quarter Morgue

This Creole-style townhouse was once called "The Morgue Bar & Lounge", but during 1853, it actually did operate as a morgue. Today, you can visit this supposed haunted building located in the French Quarter.

During the middle of the 19th century, there was an outbreak of yellow fever. In New Orleans, the total number of dead bodies became so great that residents began opening up their houses to act as makeshift morgues. Allegedly, the deceased spirits that were housed in this particular morgue still haunt the halls.


10. The 13th Gate
