The Importance of Reading
The City of New Orleans has announced that the NOLA Readers 2.0 program will be returning this school year.
NOLA Readers 2.0 is a program created through a joint effort between the Mayor's Office of Youth and Families, the New Orleans Public Library, and the Louisiana Children's Museum. This program is geared towards second grade students in New Orleans, giving them access to the world of literature through books and field trips to the city's museum and library.
This year's program is built around Derrick Barnes' book I Am Every Good Thing, which will be given to participating teachers in addition to educational tools from the museum and library. The field trip will include interactive experiences acting as a companion to the themes mentioned in the book.
"We are thrilled to offer NOLA Readers 2.0 again this year," said LCM Chief Learning Officer Dr. Shannon Blady in a press release. "A lifelong love of reading starts with positive early literacy experiences, and NOLA Readers 2.0 is just that! Our successful pilot taught us a lot about what our kids and teachers want and need, and we have built this second year with all that feedback in mind."
NOLA Readers 2.0 is ready to grow the program this school year by welcoming in more second grade students. This comes after the success of last year's program, which had 701 participants from eight schools across New Orleans.
Anyone school administrators and second grade teachers interested in taking part in NOLA Readers 2.0 should teach out to Dr. Shannon Blady at sblady@lcmc.org.
