Calgary, Canada
Calgary and New Orleans naturally don't have all that much in common. With completely different climates and ways of life, you'd never think the two would intersect—except, in some ways, they do.
Calgary, which is one of Canada's many big cities, often feels akin to, for the most part, a small suburban area rather than a huge city. As you drive through it, you'll pass many quiet and peaceful-looking homes and plenty of recreation, as there is a clear emphasis on parks. Don't be deceived though, Calgary has plenty to offer, whether you want an out-of-this-world view or just want to get out into nature.
For the former, Major Tom fits the bill. It's
the most clearly visible restaurant building in town and serves as a sort of
landmark. Sitting 40 floors from the base of the building, Major Tom provides a
wonderful view of downtown Calgary and a selection of wonderful
American/Canadian food and drinks. Below the restaurant is downtown Calgary,
with many other cool shops and restaurants. It's almost like being in a small
city in Europe.
Nature Spots
As for getting into nature, Calgary has many
parks and outdoor spaces that always seem to keep the community busy. You'll
find tons of people of any age playing sports, such as soccer and basketball, in
organized groups and with proper equipment. It's all very organized and there
are dedicated spaces for each activity, even if it is something as leisurely as
walking or running.
Adjacent to Calgary and about an hour out, depending on where you go, Banff is the clear sparkle of the greater Calgary
area. What can only be described as photogenic, Banff is perfect for anyone as
it has plenty of trails for hiking, beautiful clear lakes, and wonderful
weather that will have you eager to come back. With it's own villages full of
shops and food options, Banff has a little bit of something for everyone and is
a fantastic escape from city life.
