About Playgirl & the Book
Since 1973, Playgirl has been scandalizing viewers with its risque male models and daring stories about entertainment, relationships, and more. Despite its final print issue in 2016, the magazine was—and its online version continues to be—a cultural icon that played a pivotal role in the sexual revolution of women during the 70s and 80s. One of the first magazines to bring male nudity to the mainstream, Playgirl contrasted heavily with the infamous Playboy in bringing forth a similar magazine that focused on female empowerment, rather than objectification.
Playgirl: The Official History of a Cult Magazine will celebrate and showcase the magazine's historic articles, photography, and artwork during its early years for its 50th anniversary. The art book will feature archival materials, old photographs, and editorials discussing the publication's influence on the women's liberation movement, including stories about major players in the women's liberation movement, reproductive health, and interviews with feminist legends.
