"Passing the Torch"
The New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies is hosting
its 8th annual induction gala benefit on February 11 starting at 12
p.m. in the St Charles Ballroom at Loyola University. The event is being hosted
by The New Orleans Society of Dance and will serve to raise money for the organization's youth and young adult programing.
The Baby Doll Ladies are committed to preserving the long-standing
tradition of jazz dance and women's folk art in Louisiana. The late Miriam Batiste Reed
was the original baby doll and spent over five decades committed to the Mardi
Gras dancing parade traditions and masking practices. The gala will mark the transferring of
the role onto the current leader Mellisia White.
Guests are invited to attend the gala to witness this
ceremony, along with an afternoon of celebration for this New Orleans tradition.
The event will include a buffet, open bar, and performances by the
signature Baby Doll Ladies, as well as music by Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, the Treme
Brass Band, and more. Tickets are currently on sale.
Finally, be sure not to miss the Baby Doll Ladies performing
in their full glory as the join The Mardi Gras Day dance-parade along St.
Charles Avenue with the BDL Free Agents Brass Band. Their route can be viewed on the Baby Doll Ladies' YouTube page.
