Origin

The spark to explore the universe emerged in a then nine-year-old Tyson and quickly blossomed into his great passion. He was determined to acquire as much knowledge as possible about astronomy. So upon graduating from Bronx High School of Science, Tyson obtained a BA in Physics from Harvard (1980), a master's degree in astronomy from the University of Texas (1983), and a master's and doctorate in astrophysics from Columbia (1989). His pursuit of knowledge granted him the opportunity to become the director of the Hayden Planetarium in 1996. His rising stardom in astrophysics eventually caught the eyes of the White House.

A Call to Serve

An appointment from President Bush in 2001 to collaborate with other like minded individuals in hopes to expand the U.S. Aerospace Industry gave Tyson the platform to continue his pursuit of knowledge. His success with his first appointment granted him the opportunity to be appointed again in 2004 to serve on the "Moon, Mars, and Beyond" commission. His time with the White House did not go unseen. NASA appointed Tyson to the Advisory Council in hopes that he and others can help expand space exploration while working within a limited budget.

Essayist Exploration

While attending the University of Texas at Austin, Tyson created a column in the university's astronomy magazine StarDate, geared towards answering readers' questions about, well, astronomy. StarDate was just the beginning of his writing journey. While Tyson was working on the commissions with President Bush, he was also a monthly essayist for Natural History magazine. Currently, Tyson has over 15 books published, including his memoir The Sky Is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist and a plethora of published professional publications.

Cosmic Connection

His novel Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution, co-written with Donald Goldsmith, laid the foundation to PBS show Origins, which aired in September 2004. He appeared on the show as an on-camera host. His pursuit of astronomy reaching various audiences through television did not end there. Tyson appeared again as an on-camera host in NOVA ScienceNOW, a PBS spinoff program. He created a space for the understanding of life and our contribution to the universe to be accessible to everyone.

In 2017, Dr. Tyson published Astrophysics for People In A Hurry. It is not surprising that this book became a bestseller domestically and internationally. Dr. Tyson was able to condense his brilliance into a digestible masterpiece catered to the average reader. Given his experience in creating a space for science in communities where it was not developed or nurtured enough, could New Orleans just be a random stop on his tour to educate? It is not. It is imperative for you to include Neil deGrasse Tyson's "Cosmic Perspective" in your pursuit of knowledge.
