Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience
The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf in Mobile, AL, is launching the Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience, a permanent museum to honor and recognize Buffett and his various philanthropist and creative endeavors.
Opening day is set for Saturday, September 12 and will include a variety of performances and events throughout the weekend.
About the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf
Dedicated to preserving and sharing the prosperous maritime history of the Gulf South, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf showcases the region's culture and economic importance. The idea for the museum began in the 1990s, in effort to restore Mobile's waterfront and create a world-class educational attraction. It wasn't until 2015 when the museum officially opened its doors, after years of planning, fundraising, and construction. More than 80 interactive experiences are available in the museum's impressive, life-sized replica of a container ship. The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf explores everything from ship-building to marine commerce, sharing the lives of those who are connected to our Gulf.
Today, the museum stands as a cultural and educational resource, motivating attendees of all ages to better understand, appreciate, and protect our shores and waters.
Jimmy Buffett's Roots
The accomplished "Margaritaville" singer/songwriter, author, philanthropist, and businessman was known for his "island escapism" persona. Buffett advertised following life on one's own terms. As a Mobile native, Buffett and his family have deep ties to the Gulf's maritime industry, which proved to be a passionate interest throughout his career. His parents worked at the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co., across from the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf. Creating a direct connection between the exhibition and the Buffett family, the museum preserves artifacts connected to his grandfather's maritime history.
The Jimmy Buffett Experience explores these generational connections through artifacts, film, and first-hand accounts, allowing visitors a sneak peek into Buffett's relationship and influence on the maritime world.
What to Expect at the Exhibition
The exhibit spans 6,000 square feet and combines a gallery of rare artifacts with an immersive concert experience, crafted to bring attendees a closer look at who Buffett really was. More than 130 artifacts are featured, including his 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame statue, his 12-string Martin guitar, never-before-released concert footage, and so much more. Buffett's life will be in full view in this wide-scale exhibit tour.
A museum of this mass scale wouldn't be possible without extensive research, collections, and accounts given by Buffett's family and the museum team. These materials offer a cohesive, broader look into Buffett's life beyond his music, including his family, maritime interest, and business ventures.
"Creating the Jimmy Buffett Experience has been an absolute honor for our entire team. We have spent nearly two years listening, researching, collecting stories, curating artifacts, and working to capture the remarkable life of a man who meant so much to so many people," Karen Poth, executive director of the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf, said in a press release.
Opening Weekend Events
The Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience will open to the public on Saturday, September 12. Weekend festivities will also occur starting with "Margaritas and Memories," featuring Mac McAnally and Scotty Emerick at Mobile's historic Saenger Theater. The unveiling of the new larger-than-life Buffett sculpture will happen alongside the grand opening. Live music and a nautical-inspired mural festival will take place at Cooper Riverside Park in Mobile.
