Festivals Acadiens et Créoles
Since its official founding in 1977, Festivals Acadiens et Créoles has uplifted and reinforced the French language and culture within the Southern Louisiana community. This annual three-day event will take place October 10-12 in Lafayette, Louisiana, at Girard Park.
Over the years, the festival has evolved into one of the largest cultural celebrations in Louisiana, drawing tens of thousands of visitors annually. The culturally rich weekend features three interconnected festivals with one common goal: cultural restoration. These include the Bayou Food Festival, Louisiana Craft Fair, and Festival de Musique.
History of the Festival
Active efforts to support and preserve Creole and Cajun culture have been vital due to historical attempts to suppress this heritage in Southern Louisiana. After World War I, the United States pursued efforts to homogenize the state's population, leading to the decline of French language and culture. French speakers were often seen as illegitimate, prompting many to abandon their heritage in favor of traditional English customs.
However, following World War II, returning soldiers recognized the value of their French-speaking abilities while abroad. They came back with a renewed pride in their roots and emphasized the importance and uniqueness of diverse languages and traditions. This cultural resurgence sparked a revival of Creole and Cajun identity—expressed powerfully through music, food, and crafts—ultimately leading to the birth of Festivals Acadiens et Créoles.

The Bayou Food Festival
The Bayou Food Festival is a favorite among festival-goers. A highlight within the festival is Culture Sur La Table, a special culinary event held at the Chefs Demo Table. There, visitors can watch renowned Creole chefs prepare some of their most famous and beloved dishes live.
Chef demonstrations begin Saturday at 11:15 a.m., and Culture Sur La Table will continue throughout the weekend. Be sure to check the schedule so you don't miss your favorite chefs bringing dishes to life.
In addition to live demonstrations, the Bayou Food Festival will host a wide variety of food vendors serving up authentic Louisiana cuisine. Featured vendors include:
-
Bon Creole Seafood
-
Cajun Prairie Signature Foods
-
Poupart's Beignets
-
...and many more!
Come hungry—you'll want to taste it all.
The Louisiana Crafts Fair
Running alongside the festivities at Girard Park, the Louisiana Crafts Fair showcases the region's finest artisans. Hosted by the Louisiana Crafts Guild, this juried event invites dozens of Southern Louisiana artists to display and sell their handcrafted work.
The Louisiana Crafts Guild is known for its dedication to excellence, with only three out of every 10 applicants being selected for membership. This commitment to quality will be on full display at the festival, where visitors can browse, buy, and admire works of true craftsmanship—from pottery and textiles to jewelry and woodwork.
Festival de Musique

The Festival de Musique brings the soul of Southern Louisiana to life with music performed across seven stages. Featuring artists of both regional significance and national acclaim, this event celebrates the unique sound and spirit of Southern music.
The festival kicks off Friday at 5 p.m. with a ceremonial Boudin Cutting, followed by Zachary Richard: 50 ans de Réveille. The music will continue all weekend long with acts such as Rockin' Dopsie Jr. and family, Wayne Toups, the Lost Bayou Ramblers, and many more. Be sure to check the festival's lineup so you don't miss your favorite performers.
A Living and Breathing Culture
The rich and distinctive culture of Southern Louisiana is something its people have long fought to preserve and restore. The significance of Creole and Cajun heritage extends far beyond the region—it contributes to the broader cultural identity of the United States.
From language and music to food and craftsmanship, this culture is deeply woven into the fabric of Louisiana. Its restoration is not just important—it's essential to understanding and embracing the full story of who we are.
