The Voice in My Head is God

In case you missed it: Here's what happened at the 2 Chainz author talk and book signing event this weekend.

Grammy Award-winning rapper and songwriter 2 Chainz took the stage in New Orleans this weekend; not for a music performance or music video shoot but for an author talk and book signing for his memoir The Voice in My Head is God.

A long line of people, spanning a block from Baldwin & Co. to North Rampart Street, waited to enter the Tremé coffee shop on April 10. The book discussion was held on the coffee shop's expansive patio, surrounded by fragrant, jasmine-covered walls. Rows of Dillard University students, youth from local non-profits, and other community members filled the seats.

The candid one-hour discussion between the owner of B. Sherrie Designs and local entrepreneur Brittney Ramsey and 2 Chainz wasn't your average author talk for a faith-centered memoir.

"This book is my third therapist," 2 Chainz told Ramsey. "Music was my first. [My short film] Red Clay was my second. The book is my third."

The Georgia native shared how he doesn't cry much, but this book helped him process his trauma and life experiences. He openly talked about his upbringing with a single mother and incarcerated father, his drug-dealing past, and how the women in his life shaped who he is.

2 Chainz discussed his connection to New Orleans and reflected on his first time meeting Birdman. He said he was a big Cash Money fan and was inspired by Birdman and Lil Wayne coming up. After the main interview and before the meet-and-greet portion, the College Park artist and entrepreneur answered a few questions from the audience. He encouraged the audience to listen to their intuition, be a good person, and not be led by doubt or fear.

"I could not have done a book like this in my 20s," he affirmed. "I ultimately had to live long enough, experience enough things, and be my own case study when it comes to listening to a voice in my head, having faith, and believing something that's not tangible."
