The Green Wave took a 24-21 win
over rivals Southern Miss in the "Battle for the Bell"
Tulane's late victory over rival Southern Miss
came down to three improbable moments. A quarterback substitution, a 70-yard
rushing touchdown, and a blocked chip shot field in the final moments saw the
Green Wave emerge victorious in a game where the outcome was in doubt.
Head Coach Will Hall says he is proud of the
fight his players showed, but says they need to be better which is up to the
coaching staff.
"We've got character, heart, effort, and love
for each other, but we need to play better," Hall said. "There are so many
simple things we can fix, but we need to fix them and that starts with the
coaching staff. We have to coach better."
Although Hall will look for mistakes from the
game and ways to fix them, the team had some glaring bright spots.
Breakout Games for Two Green Wave Players
The win came down to big plays from key
players. For two of those key players, the big plays were a long time coming.
Green Wave running back Maurice Turner waited
patiently for a chance to prove himself after a 2025 season when injuries
bogged him down.
On Saturday. September 26, he took that chance and ran with it, rushing
for 200 yards and scoring the go-ahead touchdown on a 70-yard scamper late in
the fourth quarter.
Turner says he gives credit to his fellow
running backs who helped pick him up after a disappointing start to the game.
"Starting off the game, I was down on myself
because I had two bad runs. The running back room as a whole came up to me,"
Turner said.
"They said, 'You got this. You know you're
better than that. Get out your own head.' After that, I made one big explosive
run and it took off after that."
Wide receiver Anthony Brown-Steven's also had
his coming out party in the close win.
After getting little action in his first three
games for the Green Wave, the Kentucky transfer scored his first touchdown and
finished the game with 85 yards on five catches.
Brown-Stevens put together a performance most
receivers would appreciate, but Hall said he believes Brown-Steven's would say
he came up short by his standards.
"If [Brown-Stevens] was in here, he would tell
you he's probably a little disappointed," Hall said. "He could have had more
big plays, he knows that, and he's going to work to make those plays."

The Green Wave are off next week before
heading to West Point for matchup against Army on Saturday, October 10.
