A Center for Art and Engagement

The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, which is dedicated to furthering the education of Louisiana's residents, has announced that it will be celebrating the grand opening of its brand-new community gathering space.

The space, officially called The Helis Foundation John Scott Center, is named after New Orleans artist, educator, and humanist John T. Scott. The center, located in NOLA's CBD neighborhood, is 6,000 square feet and will house 51 works by Scott, as well as serve as modern public square where people can gather to experience different programs and exhibits related to the artist and his work. The center is meant to foster dialogue in reference to social change and the humanities, as well as cultivate community among residents.

The Grand Opening

The grand opening for The Helis Foundation John Scott Center, which is located at 928 Lafayette St. in the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities' Turners' Hall, will be September 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and will feature tours of the center, live music, sno-balls, and outdoor art activities the entire family can enjoy.

Future Programing

Once the center is officially open to the public, its hours of operation will be 12 to 6 p.m. every Thursday to Saturday, while staying closed Sundays to Wednesdays. Admission for anyone 13 years old and up will be $7, while children 12 years and younger can get into the center for free.

Along with the grand opening, future programing for the center has also been announced. One is titled The Eye of the Beholder: Why New Perspectives On Historical Documents Open Old Wounds. This free event will take place September 17 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will feature a Constitution Day lecture by 2022 Humanities Book of the Year awardee Fatima Shaik.

Another event will be Collaborating at the Crossroads: Activating Programming and Partnerships, which will take place September 22 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. This free moderated panel discussion will serve as an introduction to John T. Scott and the center, as well as programming partnership opportunities.
