What is a Second Line?

A second line is a local musical tradition dating back to the late 1800s. The event features a variety of brass instruments, with musicians performing while walking.

This musical parade started as a tradition among African American communities in New Orleans. The second line could be in celebration of many milestones: freedom, the acquisition of social aid, and honoring those who have passed, among other things.

Second lines are split into two parts: the first line features the grand marshal, the band, and the honoree. The second line features the marching revelers, following the first line. Parade leaders have decorated umbrellas and the other participants shake handkerchiefs, all while dancing.
