Get Out And Get Reading With The New Orleans Public Library

The New Orleans Public Library is holding its annual Summer Fun & Reading Challenge starting on June 1 this year.

According to the library's website, libraries across the country are hosting summer reading programs to raise awareness surrounding literacy and reading. Reading is a skill that children and teens have achieved throughout the school year, and the program hopes to increase interest in libraries.

All children, teens, and adults who complete all nine squares of their blackout bingo card will receive a limited-edition tote bag by Lionel Milton, a local New Orleans artist known for his vibrant and energetic artwork that reflects the city's rich history and culture. His inspiration for the tote bag was his childhood in the lower 9th ward when he would read with his grandma. For more information on Milton, you can visit his website.

Second Harvest Food Bank is also offering free snacks for youth ages 18 and under starting June 1. Snacks will be available from Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the following libraries: Central City, Mid-City, Rose F. Keller, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
