Calling all students! Along with the help and support of its generous sponsors, the New Orleans Opera has recently announced that dress rehearsals for its next four shows will be open and free to all students of the city.
Beginning in September, with the Opera's performance of Rossini's famous Barber of Seville, New Orleans' schools will have the opportunity to register their students for free access to the show's fully-staged, ready-to-go dress rehearsal. This first "Student Night Out" will take place on September 28— just days before the opera opens its curtain officially on September 30 & October 2.
The "Student Night Out" tradition will continue for the following three operas as well. Schools can sign their students up for free viewings of Hansel and Gretel on November 16, Charlie Parker's Yardbird on January 18, 2023, and Madame Butterfly on March 22, 2023. While some of the above operas are sung in different languages, all shows are made accessible to English speakers through supertitles.
But students aren't the only ones who have the opportunity to enjoy the opera. For every five kids who attend a given show, one free chaperone ticket will be awarded as well. That way, everyone can have a little fun and experience something new that New Orleans has to offer.
The discounts don't just stop there, however. Eligible students also have the choice to purchase specially discounted tickets for the true shows themselves at the low price of just $10.
Performances take place at one of two New Orleans Opera locations: the Mahalia Jackson Theater in Congo Square/Louis Armstrong Park, or the New Orleans Jazz Market on Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard.
