Legion of Mars 2026 Ball

There's only one party on Earth where you can hear Gustav Holtz's planetary theme of Mars, then the Star Spangled Banner, then "Bourbon Street Parade." In its 13 years of parading, the Legion of Mars has become one of New Orleans' most visible and popular daytime parades.

Being the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the 2026 theme of "Celebrating Our Nation's 250th Year" was equal parts historical and festive. Also of major importance to the 2026 theme was the emphasis on first responders and local security in the New Orleans area. The 2026 outing of the Legion will include dedicated celebrations of the National Guard and NOPD law enforcement. Following their role in protecting New Orleans' French Quarter after the 2025 Bourbon Street terrorism attack, the parade is set to honor the security that has allowed America's most iconic city to continue partying in safety.

As the lights dimmed, the ordering of events for the ball is a festive and patriotic celebration fit for the god of war himself. Although the Hyatt Regency is host to no shortage of Carnival bal-masques, the Legion of Mars is unique in its revelry set against a fully-outfitted Marine Corps band. The band played the various anthems of the Armed Forces, with regaled attendees (or their loved ones) standing in representation. The masked revelers, proceeding to the tune of "Bourbon Street Parade," kept the tone thoroughly in the realm of Mardi Gras, and appearances by Mayor Helena Moreno and NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick point to the krewe's prestige in the local community. Moreno, of course, was invited to provide the "unknown base" to the krewe's iconic "Mardi Grog" cocktail. The more humorous aspects, of course, give way to the commemoration of MIA and fallen troops in the military, recognized by all in attendance through an empty chair fully adorned yet never filled this side of heaven.

The presentation of the 2026 court began with the royalty of several years' past, anniversaries and tradition being of paramount importance to any Mardi Gras krewe worth their spot on the Uptown route. The presentation of the court of King and Queen Primus XIII processed through Maids, Ladies in Waiting, Princesses, and past royalty all culminating in the entrance of Victoria Rose Talamo as Queen Primus XIII. With everything in place, the krewe downed the Mardi Grog and danced the night away to the sounds of Louisiana Spice. The next great victory of the Mardi Gras War is all set to be won.

The Legion of Mars is set to roll on Saturday, February 7, 2026, following the Krewe of Pontchartrain. For more information, see the Legion of Mars' website at legionofmars.com/parade-news.
