Celebrating Service
One of Mardi Gras's most up-and-coming krewes has had
celebrations to match its biggest parade yet.
The Legion of Mars, named for the Roman god of war and
honoring military and law enforcement, celebrated its annual Grand Ball at the
New Orleans Hyatt Regency on January 31. The parade's theme, "United in
Service," highlights the common bonds of first responders and servicemembers
across all branches of the military.
Leading to the grand ballroom of the Hyatt was a
custom entrance décor replete with tropical fauna, sandbags, and military
props. Captain of the parade, Rico Alvendia, had used that same display in the
veterans-centric celebrations of this year's Washington Mardi Gras. In an
adjacent room, royalty and veterans chatted and prepared their costumes over
specially-branded Hubig's Pies while members of the New Orleans-based Marine
Forces Reserve Band practiced military anthems and early jazz standards.
Members of the legion gathered for lessons in krewe
history and pre-presentation pep talks, with Capt. Alvendia, past kings, and
dedicated krewe chaplain Sidney Speaks recognizing the 12th outing of the legion
and its growth from 15 original members to a robust parade with hundreds of
riders. A distinct cause for celebration in this year's parade is the inclusion
of a dedicated "Healthcare Heroes" float, featuring krewe riders and guests who
work in Louisiana healthcare, befitting the parade's theme, "United in Service."
The ball presentation itself began with the Reserve
Band and the masked revelers dancing for the crowd, preceding the presentation
of the queen, maids, and royal court. First responders were honored in a speech
delivered by Louisiana 2nd Congressional District Representative Troy Carter,
also instrumental in the Washington Mardi Gras, honoring their courage in the
face of the New Year's Day attack on Bourbon Street. Also in attendance
representing local first responders was NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick.
The ball proceeded with several of Mars' unique
traditions, including the honoring and remembrance of MIA and POW military, the
creation of the krewe's signature "Mardi Grog" cocktail, and the presentation
of krewe king Primus XII. Celebrations extended well into the night with music
provided by Louisiana Spice. With the ball prepping the krewe for another year,
the Legion of Mars is prepared to embark on its largest-scale "Mardi Gras War"
to date.
The Legion of Mars is set to roll at 12:30 p.m. on
Saturday, February 22. Visit the
Legion of Mars' webpage for more information on the parade,
