The Flambeau leads the parade tonight escorting Krewe of Hermes, Krewe D’Etat on Friday, February 09, 2018. District Chief Chris E. Michal of the New Orleans Fire Department supervises as the flambeau are lit on Jefferson Ave using propane tanks to light the kerosene. The Flambeau (Flambeaux) is a Mardi Gras Tradition debuted with Krewe of Comus on Fat Tuesday in 1857 so revelers can see carnival parades at night but the flambeau has been brought into the 21 century using natural gas for fuel instead of the more dangerous liquid sources.
