Fair Grounds Race Course's New Season
On November 19, Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots is set to open its 155th Thoroughbred Racing Season. The historic New Orleans racetrack will be open for the duration of the season through March 21, 2027.
The Fair Grounds has been operating since 1872 and is one of the oldest tracks in the country. It's been a fixture of New Orleans sports life for many years. The season ahead follows an exciting one at the track, with racehorse Golden Tempo taking all of his Kentucky Derby qualifying points at the Fair Grounds during the 2025-26 season.
What's New This Season?
The 155th season will see a number of new events introduced along with the return of a number of fan favorites. Opening weekend will see the debut of the Jambalaya Jamboree Cook-Off on November 21 with teams competing for cash prizes and the title of Jambalaya Champion.
Other new additions are Fair Grounds Neighborhood Family Picnic Day on January 3, Corgi Dog Races on February 20, and Jazz Fest Day on March 13. The returning favorites are Exotic Animal Races on January 30, featuring camels, ostriches and zonkeys, and Wiener Dog Races on March 6.
Visitors can also look forward to a number of renovations throughout the property. The Black Gold Room and the Pan Zareta Room have both had their interiors refreshed and the slot floor will have over 80 new machines, new carpeting, and new restrooms.
Racing Events
The season's first big event, the 102nd Thanksgiving Classic, is on November 26. There will be live racing and all-inclusive dining options in a number of locations around the venue as part of the Thanksgiving celebration.
Louisiana Champions Day is back on December 12 with 10 races featuring Louisiana-bred horses. The Road to the Derby will get underway on Dec 19 and run into the new year with a number of young thoroughbreds on the path to the Kentucky Derby.
The big event of the season, the 114th Louisiana Derby, is on March 20, 2027. It's a one million dollar race and will see some of the best horses, jockeys, and trainers in the country all in one place before the season ends on March 21.

The 155th racing season is from November 19, 2026, to March 21, 2027. General Grandstand is free on eligible racing days, while a range of paid seating and special event packages are also available. Special event tickets start at $10.
