Living in New Orleans, we are fortunate to always have our pick of events at our fingertips. Whether this is Greek Fest, Essence Fest, Voodoo Music Fest, Jazz Fest or many others, our city never seems to be bored. While our list of festivals or events could get any longer, our city introduces an event that combines culture and entertainment and is a little slice of Italy. This event is curated by the American Italian Cultural Center (AICC) and is entitled the Opera in the Piazza. This event is held annually, this year on June 10th from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and is an opportunity for New Orleanians to learn about different aspects of Italian culture through various live musical performances.
Do I have to buy a Plane Ticket to Italy Immediately?
Nope. The event is hosted in a New Orleans' own plaza, the Piazza d'Italia at 377 Poydras Street, right behind the American Italian Cultural Center. The Piazza d'Italia has been referred to in the past as an "architectural masterpiece" and evokes the spirit of Italy in its architectural composition. Previously at this event, experienced opera singers have sung pieces from notable Italian composers such as Rossini, Bellini, and Verdi. Not only this, but many of the performers who have participated also worked in coalition with the New Orleans Opera Association. While gaining an understanding of the talent and architecture present in this event, the Opera in the Piazza is also a celebration of Italy's transition from a monarchy to a republic after the time of World War II.
Being an outdoor venue and having talented artist that range from all different ages, the Opera in the Piazza creates a comfortable, yet culturally informative atmosphere that is fit for families, friends, and couples alike. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to bring outdoor chairs to sit and enjoy the music as well as partake in the Italian food and drinks available upon arrival. Tickets for this event are $30.00 for non-members and $25.00 for members of the AICC, with a $100 VIP ticket package that includes seating in the Piazza d'Italia, entrance to the indoor event space, and access to the balcony overlooking the event itself. This event is not one to miss and is a little slice of Italy that you don't have to travel far to taste!
