Walk for Students and HBCUs
Get some steps in for a good cause at this year's Walk for Education® event in New Orleans.
The walk, which is organized by the UNCF (United Negro College Fund), will directly support and raises funds for students of color in Louisiana who are trying to get accepted into and make their way through college. It will take place on October 22, starting at 8:30 a.m., and will kick off at the University of New Orleans along Lakeshore Drive.
This year's event will be in-person after being virtual the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The NOLA walk will be locally sponsored by the University of New Orleans and WWL-TV (Channel 4). The WWL-TV morning news team will also serve as hosts during the event.
The UNCF Walk for Education® in New Orleans, which is part of a national walk event across the entire United States, will also help raise funds to support both national and local historically Black colleges and universities such as Xavier University of Louisiana and Dillard University, both of which are UNCF members.
"During our 78 years and despite heavy odds, UNCF has continued to move the needle for HBCUs and students of colors, fueling their progress," President and CEO of UNCF Dr. Michael L. Lomax said in a press release. "Throughout the last two years, we have seen an enormity of racial division and strife, which has been compounded for our students by the COVID-19 pandemic. We continue to find ourselves at a crossroads where the need of our students and the demand on our member HBCUs is larger than ever before. I've said this before, and I'll say it again—we are at risk of washing away a generation of talented and deserving African American and minority students. Donations are urgently needed to ensure our next generation of American leaders get to college, succeed and graduate. We invite everyone to register and join our Walk for Education to help ensure better futures for us all."
