Tales of the Cocktail 2026

Tales of the Cocktail 2026 kicked off Sunday, July 19, with its typically light opening-day schedule. Hundreds of bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts gathered at the House of Blues on Decatur Street to watch the FIFA Club World Cup Final before making their way to the Hilton New Orleans Riverside's Public Belt for Mijenta Tequila's "The Match" afterparty.

The Public Belt, billed as a speakeasy-style hideaway on the hotel's second floor, proved far too small for the crowd. The event featured award-winning Latino bartenders from across the country serving five signature tequila cocktails, alongside a tasting station showcasing Mijenta's full portfolio including the eight-year-aged Gran Reserva ($199) and the Cristalino, aged in Symphony Oak barrels ($119).

Mijenta's reputation is well deserved. The brand was named Agave Producer of the Year and Overall Spirits Producer of the Year by the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in 2023—every expression I sampled demonstrated why.

Unfortunately, the venue couldn't keep up with demand. Shortly after the doors opened, a one-in, one-out line stretched down the second-floor hallway. Once inside, navigating the packed room—or even reaching the bar—became an event in itself.

Eventually, we settled on a refreshing tequila-and-soda cocktail garnished with fresh mango and Tajín. Despite the heat and shoulder-to-shoulder crowd, the atmosphere never lost its energy. The DJs kept the music pumping, bartenders climbed onto the bar to sing and dance with guests, and servers weaved through the crowd with trays of passed appetizers. It felt more like an impromptu party than a traditional tasting event.

As opening-night parties go, "The Match" delivered on energy, hospitality, and exceptional tequila. The only thing it lacked was enough room for everyone who wanted to experience it. With a larger venue, this could have been one of the standout events of opening weekend.
