Eagles vs Bearkats at Caesars Superdome
The Georgia Southern Eagles and Sam Houston Bearkats have accepted the invitation to compete in this 24th annual iteration of R + L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Thursday, December 19. The game kicks off at 6 p.m. and will be televised on the ESPN2 channel.
Facing Off
Georgia Southern returns to the bowl for a second time after their showing in 2020, when the team earned a 38-3 victory against Louisiana Tech under the leadership of MVP quarterback Shai Wertz. Their roster now includes several all-conference selections such as Sun Belt defensive player of the year, and first team all Sun Belt Conference, Marques Watson Trent. The senior linebacker leads in tackles per game (10.0) and ranks 8th nationally.
Sam Houston enters with a 9-3 overall record and a 6-2 mark in conference play. The team finished third in Conference USA standings, a remarkable growth from their 3-9 overall record in 2023. Their defense ranks second to Louisiana Tech in Conference USA and is led by junior defensive back Caleb Weaver, who finished the season with a conference-leading four interceptions, and senior linebacker Kavian Gaither. The two have made 62 and 59 tackles in the conference, respectively. This will be the first time the Bearkats are Bowl-eligible.
"This has been a historic season for our program, and it is extremely exciting for us to be finishing our season in the New Orleans Bowl," said Brad Cornelsen, interim head coach and offensive coordinator of Sam Houston, in a press release.
