First Jazz Fest Screening

If you're too young to have witnessed the first Jazz Fest in person, the Friends of the Cabildo is giving locals a one-night-only screening of rare 16mm film footage of the inaugural Jazz Fest.

The screening will take place at 6 p.m. on April 22 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint.

The screening will feature seven short films shot by former WDSU cameraman Don Perry at the 1970 Jazz Fest. It will showcase performances from legendary artists including Mahalia Jackson, Duke Ellington, Pete Fountain, and Danny Barker. The films were donated to the Louisiana State Museum in 1978 and digitized in 2012.

The Band-In-A-Pocket jazz trio will perform live during portions of the films without audio. General admission tickets are $20, and tickets for Friends of the Cabildo members are $10. Tickets can be purchased by phone through the Friends of the Cabildo office at (504) 523-3939 or online at friendsofthecabildo.org.
