Insidious: Out of the Further (2026)
The original Insidious from 2010 has some effective jump scares, but it really isn't a very good movie thanks to a convoluted plot. Insidious: Out of the Further is the sixth film in this horror series, and while it's a rehash of the first film, it's actually better made with good scares and a streamlined plot.
Dental hygienist and single mom Gemma (Amelia Eve) is haunted by her mother's death, as well as intense nightmares. Gemma soon discovers that she can travel to a purgatory realm known as "The Further" and is able to bring spirits back to the real world. A malevolent spirit wants to use Gemma to resurrect evil souls into the real world. Eventually, Gemma get help from psychic Elise Rainier (the always reliable Lin Shaye).
The first half of this movie is essentially a collection of horror vignettes, as the actual plot doesn't really kick in until the second half. That's fine because the early set pieces are quite imaginative and memorable such as a fort build out of sofa cushions that turns into a claustrophobic maze. There is also a gruesome teeth cleaning sequence.
Then there is the creepy trio of old people, new to the neighborhood, who seem like lost relatives of The Addams Family. The fact that these absolutely terrifying looking beings putter around the hood and everyone else on the street acts like everything is perfectly normal is unintentionally funny.
The film has an '80s feel to it, which is probably intentional since plot elements are reminiscent of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and Hellraiser (both 1987).
Insidious: Out of the Further is a minor but effective horror film and not a bad way to spend a night at the movies.
