Hadestown, presented by the New Orleans Theatre Association and part of the Hancock Whitney Broadway in New Orleans 2021-2022 season, will be playing at the Saenger Theatre from December 28, 2021 to January 2, 2022. Tickets start at $37.

The musical is based on the Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice, as well as Hades and Persephone, and reimagines the classic stories in a setting that gives of a 1920s/1930s French Quarter type of feel. In fact, New Orleans served as a major inspiration during the creation of the musical.

The music, with roots in folk and New Orleans jazz, is by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell. She developed original idea for the musical for her indie theater project in Vermont and ended up turning it into an acclaimed album before director and writer Rachel Chavkin collaborated with Mitchell to turn Hadestown into what it is today.

Hadestown has proven to be massively popular, winning eight 2019 Tony Awards®, including Best New Musical, the 2020 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Theater Album, and many more awards.

"At Hancock Whitney, we are proud to support the arts and are honored to bring award winning shows to New Orleans," Billy Hoffmann, Hancock Whitney senior vice president, said. "Hadestown is a welcome addition to a truly amazing lineup this season of Hancock Whitney Broadway in New Orleans."

In a joint statement, producers Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy said, "Throughout its development, Hadestown has been deeply influenced by audiences around the world. We are thrilled and humbled to now share this beautiful story of hope, faith, and rebirth—written and directed by two amazingly talented women and brought to life by a diverse company of performers—with audiences across North America."
