A Tribute to the Big Easy
On November 15, Jamie Bernstein will release his newest single: "Not a City a Star." A love letter to the city of New Orleans, Bernstein seeks to express his adoration for the city, its musical history, and expansive culture through his newest single.
Inspired by the works of Louis Armstrong, the sounds of trumpets, and more, "Not a City a Star" uses imagery to identify the city as a timeless and classic backdrop to many important cultural and historical events. Despite never saying "New Orleans," Bernstein offers that the meaning of "star" in our current culture is—to him—embodied by the city of New Orleans and therefore represented by the word's usage.
The creative process of "Not a City a Star," and Bernstein's subsequent album, was anything but normal. In partnership with rngineer and producer Mark Howard, the two sailed the Sea of Abaco, writing, refining, and recording what would become Bernstein's new album in June 2024. Contrary to today's hyper-synthesized and auto-tuned music, Bernstein and Howard sought to create authentic tunes reflective of their spiritual and transformative life journeys. Featuring sounds of afternoon rain and the sloshing of water against the hull of their sail boat, this new album fosters relaxation and connection through this unique creative process.
