On Tuesday, February 27, Tulane University began new construction on their Uptown campus. The new Commons building, which will open in 2019, will have a dining room, multipurpose space, and relocate the Newcomb College Institute into the new building. The dining hall and multipurpose space are costing up to $55 million. The funding is coming from the university’s $1.3 billion fundraising campaign.

The Newcomb College Institute educates women for leadership and provides a woman-centered experience in a coed organization. The new building will have space designated for the Newcomb Alumnae Association along with a courtyard and reading room.

The Commons building is only one of the many new projects Tulane University has lined up. Tulane University is developing a hospitality program at the New Orleans Culinary and Hospitality Institute (NOCHI). Also, their A.B. Freeman School of Business will be expanding, and new spaces for medical students and biotech executives are on the list for upcoming developments as well.
