The seminal Scottish rock band, The Waterboys are back in the US for another tour, hitting Tipitina’s Friday night. This time around the band includes Steve Wickham (electric fiddle, mandolin, 1985-90, 2000-present), Ralph Salmins (drums, 2011-present), and keyboardist Brother Paul, bassist David Hood and lead guitarist Zach Ernst, all of whom joined the band in 2013. This is Mike Scott’s attempt to combine both the Scottish and US versions of his band in order to make touring easier. When a band has been around for as long as the Waterboys have been, there are two things that could happen, the band could just play a run of the mill greatest hits show or play an almost entire album of new material. The band chose to do the latter and played eight of the nine tracks represented on Modern Blues. This approach does leave some audience favorites out, but overall comes off as fresh and energetic.
